Artery Occlusion

Definition
Disruption of blood flow through an artery causing
ischemia and possibly permanent monocular loss of
vision.  A CRAO is an ocular EMERGENCY.

Immediate Treatment
Lower the IOP
- AC Paracentesis,
                             Globe Massage
                             Iopidine
Carbogen (95% oxygen, 5% carbon dioxide)

If resolved within the first 97 minutes, most vision can be restored.  After 4 hours, vision loss is likely permanent.

Hyperviscosity/Hypercoagulability
Birth Control


Primary Workup
ESR/CRP (GCA)
Lipid Panel (Cholestrol)
EKG (Calcium clots coming from heart valves)
Carotid Doppler (check cartotid artery stenosis)

Secondary Workup
Hyperviscosity Syndromes
Hypercoagulability Syndromes
